When I read, and I enjoy the book, I emotionally invest myself. Ethan’s conflict is believable to everyday life, not just with relationships, but with the hard choices that people need to make on a daily basis. Other students in my honors class did not enjoy the novel, but I enjoyed it. Ethan shows that one can be happy, even while living miserably. I believe that Edith Wharton did a wonderful job writing this novel. Ethan decides that he will take Mattie to catch a train, though they never make it quite that far. Events that follow this conflict lead Ethan to write Zeena a note, telling her he is leaving with Mattie. Zeena wishes to send Mattie off and hire a real in-home nurse. Later that night, Ethan and Zeena get into a fight. She points out minute changes in Ethan since Mattie started living with them, such as Ethan starting to shave every morning. She senses that Mattie and Ethan have feelings for each other. She confronts Ethan and Mattie about how the dish was broken. Naturally, the plan backfires and Zeena finds the broken dish. Until he is able to buy some glue to repair it, Ethan puts the pieces back together, but hides the dish from Zeena. Mattie’s choice to serve pickles to Ethan in that dish was a bad idea. Mattie seems to share these feelings, and their plans seem to work - at least until the cat knocks over Zeena’s prized red dish. Slowly, Ethan and Mattie start to fall for each other, and when Zeena leaves the house to visit a new doctor, Ethan sees it as the perfect chance to get closer to Mattie. Mattie is nearly clueless about most housekeeping activities, prompting Ethan to do certain tasks, such as light the fire, before he starts doing his own chores.
